Lake Norman is the largest man-made lake in North Carolina. Duke Energy built it on the Catawba River behind Cowans Ford Dam, filling the basin between 1962 and 1964. It covers 32,510 acres and about 520 miles of shoreline across four counties. Cornelius holds a long run of that shoreline, from Ramsey Creek Park south past Jetton Park.
Lakefront and near-lake lots bring their own drain field problems. Ground near the shoreline sits closer to the water table, and winter and spring are the wet months here. A field that handles summer flow can go soggy in February. Many of these lots also fall toward a cove, so wet spots turn up downhill from the tank.
Water load matters as much as soil. A lake house that fills with guests on summer weekends pushes more water through the tank than usual. Big surges carry solids out toward the field and speed up the clog. A look inside the tank tells us how much of that has already happened.
Cornelius sits in the Piedmont uplands, where soil weathers out of hard rock into red and brown clay. USDA soil records describe the Mecklenburg series, first mapped in this county in 1910. It drains well on top, but the clay subsoil takes water at only 0.06 to 0.2 inches an hour. The Iredell series, also common on Piedmont uplands, is slower still at 0.0015 to 0.06 inches an hour.
Those same records give the Iredell series a perched water table 1 to 2 feet down from December through April. A drain field only works if the soil under it can take the water. Put slow clay under a field, and a thin layer of biomat is enough to stop absorption.
Biomat is the black, slimy layer of organic build-up that forms on the soil around the drain lines. It seals the trench walls the way a liner would. Our in-tank aeration unit puts oxygen and aerobic bacteria into the tank, and those bacteria digest that layer. As it breaks down, the clay under the field starts absorbing again.
Cornelius started as a cotton town, founded in 1893, incorporated in 1905, and small for most of a century. The 1990 census counted under 2,600 people, and the 2020 count was 31,412. The town passed 11,969 in 2000 and 24,866 in 2010. Homes went up here across very different decades, and so did their septic systems.
Much of Cornelius is on public sewer now. Charlotte Water serves the city of Charlotte and the north Mecklenburg towns, Cornelius among them. Septic systems are still working here, mostly on older properties, larger lots and parcels the sewer lines never reached. Those tanks and fields still do the same job every day.
The town has many subdivisions, from The Peninsula and Jetton Cove to Antiquity, Baileys Glen and Caldwell Station. Norman Shores, Heron Harbor, Connor Quay and Patricks Purchase sit in that mix too. An older tank in any of them often has no filter on the outlet and lids buried under grass. We fix both with risers that bring the lid up to grade and a filter on the outlet tee.
Septic in Cornelius falls under Mecklenburg County Public Health. Its Environmental Health division runs the Groundwater and Wastewater Services program, which permits and evaluates on-site wastewater systems. State rules in 15A NCAC 18E say a malfunctioning system must be reported to the health department and repaired.
The unit we install is a retrofit inside the tank you already own. It goes in through the tank's access opening, so the drain field stays in the ground. If your county health department needs to be involved, we tell you before work starts. The only digging is a shallow air line from the pump to the tank, so we call NC 811 first.
Charlotte Water draws drinking water from Lake Norman and from Mountain Island Lake just below it. A USGS study found more than 85 percent of Mountain Island Lake's inflow came from Lake Norman. Mountain Island Lake supplies drinking water to more than 600,000 people. The EPA notes a failing system can send pathogens and nutrients into nearby water, and nutrients feed lake algae.
