Septic tank riser installation brings the tank access up to ground level. A riser is a round shaft that sits on the tank top and carries a lid at the surface. A septic tank has an access opening in the top over each compartment. On older systems those openings sit under soil and grass. Finding one means probing the yard and digging it out, and the same work repeats on the next visit.
A riser ends the digging. Sections stack from the tank top up to the surface, and a lid closes the top. North Carolina's tank rules call for a riser opening wide enough to lift the tank lid out.
Ground level access matters most for the parts that need regular attention. The filter on the outlet gets rinsed and the tank gets checked for cracks or a broken tee. That work is a septic inspection, and it moves fast when the lid is at the surface.
Work starts with locating the tank and its access openings. Utility locates go through NC 811 before any digging. The soil over the opening comes off by hand. The tank top is then cleaned so the riser base sits flat.
On a concrete tank, the riser base sets on the tank top over the opening and seals to the concrete. Fasteners into the concrete hold it down. On a plastic or fiberglass tank, the base bolts to the molded ring with stainless hardware.
Riser sections stack up until the lid sits at or a little above the grass. A lid set slightly high sheds rain away from the opening instead of into the tank. North Carolina's rules ask for risers and covers built to keep surface water out. Backfill gets tamped around the riser so the ground does not settle into a low spot.
Concrete lids crack with age, and thin covers break under a mower wheel or a footstep. A broken lid over a tank is an open hole into wastewater. Replacing it with a riser and riser lid closes the opening and puts a solid surface at the top.
North Carolina's tank rules cover lid security. A lid or riser cover has to be locked, fastened down, or weigh at least 40 pounds. A lid with screws in it will not lift under a child or a pet. Every lid we set gets fastened down.
Around the riser, keep the lid visible and easy to reach. Low ground cover or a light cover that lifts off works well. Soil or mulch piled over the lid puts you back to digging. Quick access is also what keeps each visit on the maintenance plan short.

Tell us what the system is doing: slow drains, a smell, wet ground or a backup. We set a time to come look.
We open the tank and check levels, scum and sludge, the baffles and the outlet. Then we look at the drain field for wet spots and odor.
We tell you whether biological restoration fits, and whether the tank needs riser access or an effluent filter. If it will not work, we say so and point you to the right contractor.
We call NC 811 to locate utilities before anything is dug. The unit goes in through the tank access opening. The air line is trenched and the pump is set outside.
We come back about 30 days after the install to check the unit and the pump. After that the system stays on a set service schedule.
