Davidson sits on the east shore of Lake Norman, and the town's western edge follows the water. Homes near the lake and out on the rural east side run on septic tanks. Lake Norman is a Duke Energy reservoir on the Catawba River, filled between 1959 and 1964 behind Cowans Ford Dam. It covers about 32,510 acres and holds roughly 520 miles of shoreline across four counties. Davidson's western edge runs along that water, and Davidson Landing and Spinnaker Reach sit right on it. Davidson College keeps a 110-acre lake campus on the shore as well.
An arm called Lake Davidson reaches east of Interstate 77, so water is close on both sides of the highway. A lakefront lot puts the drain field near the water and often near the water table. The EPA notes a failing septic system can send pathogens and nutrients into groundwater and surface water. Nitrogen and phosphorus feed algae once they reach a lake.
A field that has stopped absorbing near the shoreline matters beyond the yard. Older lake homes often have a tank with no riser and no filter on the outlet. We add risers that bring the lid up to grade so every visit skips the shovel. We also fit an effluent filter on the outlet tee to hold back solids headed for the drain lines.
East of town, Davidson's Rural Area Plan covers about 3,780 acres of the town's extraterritorial jurisdiction. Its north boundary is the Mecklenburg and Iredell county line, and its east boundary is the Rocky River. Lots along Davidson-Concord Road and East Rocky River Road run to several acres each. Homes on land like that are usually on a tank and drain field rather than public sewer.
Big lots mean big yards, which is exactly what a replacement job would trench across. Our repair goes in through the tank's access opening instead. The only digging is a shallow line for the air hose to the tank. We call NC 811 to locate utilities before that trench is cut.
Davidson spans two counties, so the office that handles septic depends on where the property sits. In Mecklenburg County, Groundwater and Wastewater Services permits on-site wastewater systems and private wells. On the Iredell County side, that work belongs to the Onsite Water Protection program in Environmental Health. We tell you before work starts if your county needs to be involved.
The USDA named a soil series for this county. Mecklenburg soils are well drained but rated moderately low for how fast water moves through them. Across this part of the Piedmont the agency also maps heavier shrink-swell clays. The Iredell series, first described up in the Statesville area, is rated very slow for permeability.
That series carries a perched water table one to two feet down from December through April. Ground that wet gives a drain field very little room to work in late winter. A heavy summer thunderstorm can surcharge the same field again. Clay is the reason drain fields around Davidson are sensitive to extra water.
Davidson grew from 10,944 people in 2010 to 15,106 in 2020, close to a 38 percent jump. Most of that growth landed inside town, where public sewer runs. Septic stays out at the edges: lots along the lake, and the acreage east of the corporate limits. Those are the tanks that have been in the ground the longest.
Every job starts with a free look at the tank and field, done by a North Carolina certified septic installer. We check the water level in the tank, the scum and sludge depth, and the outlet. Then we check the drain field area for wet ground and odor. That tells us whether biological restoration fits your system.
Some systems need something else, and we say so after the inspection. A crushed drain line or a tank that has failed structurally will not respond to bacteria. We do not pump tanks, and we do not replace tanks or build new drain fields. When that is the answer, we point you to a contractor who does that work.
After an install, the first year of service visits comes with the job. We come back at about 30 days, then 6 months, then one year. Each visit covers the unit and the air pump, the effluent filter, and the tank and field. We add bacteria before we leave.
