Lake Norman is the largest man-made lake in North Carolina. Duke Energy built it on the Catawba River behind Cowans Ford Dam in the early 1960s. It covers about 32,500 acres, with roughly 520 miles of shoreline across four counties. Sherrills Ford and Terrell hold the Catawba County side of it, along with the 606 acres of Mountain Creek Park.
A lakefront lot puts a drain field close to the water and often on a slope. Rain runs downhill toward the lake, and so does anything the soil cannot hold. The EPA says a failing septic system can send pathogens and nutrients into groundwater and surface water. Nitrogen and phosphorus feed algae in a lake.
Waterfront neighborhoods like Northview Harbour, Island Point, Pointe Norman and Lakepointe North sit along this shore. County sewer does not reach them, so each house treats its own wastewater. The uplands around Sherrills Ford carry Piedmont soils of the Cecil and Pacolet type. They have a sandy loam surface over a red clay subsoil, with weathered rock below. Water moves through that clay slowly. A drain field in this soil has less room for error than one in sand.
Fields fail here for one main reason: biomat. Solids and grease that leave the tank feed a black slimy layer on the soil around the drain lines. That layer seals the soil, and water stops soaking in. Heavy summer storms and a house full of weekend guests push it over the edge faster.
The fix is to digest that layer rather than dig a new field. An aeration and bacteria unit goes in through the tank opening, and a small air pump outside feeds it. Aerobic bacteria break down solids in the tank, then travel out with the effluent and work on the biomat. As the layer thins, the clay starts taking water again.
Septic permits in Sherrills Ford come from Catawba County Public Health, not the state. Its Environmental Health division runs the On-Site Wastewater Program from the county seat in Newton. Environmental Health Specialists permit and inspect systems where sewer lines are not available. Everclear is a North Carolina certified septic installer and works inside those rules.

North Carolina rules for these systems live in 15A NCAC 18E. They call for pumping once scum plus sludge pass one third of the tank's liquid depth. We do not pump, so we refer that out when a tank needs it. A service visit on a set schedule keeps the tank from getting there.
The community took its name from Adam Sherrill's crossing of the Catawba River around 1747. Growth here has been quick. Census counts put the area's growth near 14 percent between 2010 and 2020. NCDOT plans to widen a 15-mile stretch of NC 150 across Catawba and Iredell counties.
Catawba County has secured state money to extend water and sewer here, and the new lines follow the main corridor. They do not reach the wooded acre lots off Mollys Backbone Road or the houses along the water. Those homes still run on the tank and field that went in when the house was built. A finished basement or a run of weekend guests sends more water through an old field.
Two things make service easy on lots like these. Risers with lids at ground level mean nobody digs to reach the tank. An effluent filter on the outlet catches hair and lint before they get to the drain lines. Both go in during the same visit as the restoration unit.
