Mooresville sits on the east shore of Lake Norman, and the ground under it is red Piedmont clay. Clay holds water instead of letting it soak away, so a drain field here works hard. The Piedmont under Mooresville is red clay country. The common soil here is the Cecil series: a sandy loam surface over deep red clay subsoil. It is North Carolina's state soil, and it moves water reasonably well while the ground stays undisturbed. What it does not do is forgive years of overloading.
USDA also maps a heavier clay across this county, the Iredell series, named for the county itself. USDA calls its permeability very slow and its shrink and swell very high. The same description puts a perched water table one to two feet down from December through April. A drain field sitting in that ground has very little room to push water in winter.
Then there is biomat. Biomat is a black slimy layer of organic matter and oxygen-starved bacteria on the soil around the drain lines. It is the most common reason a field stops taking water, and slow clay helps it thicken. That is the layer we go after when we are restoring the field biologically instead of replacing it.
Lake Norman is a Duke Energy reservoir on the Catawba River, held back by Cowans Ford Dam. Construction began in 1959, the dam was finished in 1962, and the lake filled by 1964. It covers about 32,510 acres with roughly 520 miles of shoreline. That shoreline runs through Iredell, Mecklenburg, Lincoln and Catawba counties, and Mooresville holds the east side.
Waterfront lots built before sewer lines arrived went in on a tank and a field. That was the option. Systems from the lake's early building waves are still in service around the coves. So are the ones behind the 1980s and 1990s subdivisions along Brawley School Road and the NC 150 corridor.
Many lake lots slope toward the water, so a field on the low side can stay wet for weeks. The EPA notes that a failing septic system can put nitrogen and phosphorus into groundwater and surface water. Those nutrients feed algae in a lake, which is why shoreline systems get attention here.
Septic in Mooresville runs through the Iredell County Health Department Environmental Health Division. It is the local arm of NC DHHS. It keeps an office in Mooresville as well as one in Statesville. New systems and repairs go through two approvals here: an Improvement Permit first, then an Authorization to Construct.
State rule 15A NCAC 18E .1303 sets out what counts as a malfunctioning system. Sewage on the ground counts. So does a backup into the house, or effluent within three inches of grade over a trench. The rule says the owner has to contact the local health department when that happens. Rule .1306 then gives 30 days from a notice of violation to finish the repair. The notice can set a different window.
The same rule covers pumping and filters. A tank has to be emptied whenever scum and sludge together pass one third of the liquid depth. The filter gets rinsed or replaced as needed. Mooresville has grown fast. The census counted 8,575 people in 1980 and 9,317 in 1990. By 2000 that was 18,823, and by 2010 it was 32,711. The 2020 count came in at 50,193 people across 20,842 housing units.
Lowe's put its corporate headquarters here, and the racing shops earned the town its Race City USA name. Subdivisions filled in behind both. Town sewer followed much of that growth. It did not follow all of it. Plenty of addresses here still run on a tank and a field. That covers older waterfront lots, large-lot subdivisions past the sewer line, and rural property outside the town limits.
